It often happens, talking with friends and acquaintances, to be asked what motivates me to pursue a career in the hospitality industry. Let’s be honest, why on earth would you decide to work endless hours, paid very low salary, serving high demanding and sometimes conflictual customers? I generally blame it on passion for this almost insane choice, but the truth is that there are quite a few good reasons to work in this field. Here’s my top 5:
- It’s dynamic and creative
Hospitality is about creating a product – be that food, drink or an experience – able to cover or even anticipate the needs of the customers. What our clients are looking for is constantly changing and evolving and this results in a continuous creative process to find new ways of amazing our guests. Over the past decades we have seen revolutionary changes in the field: from robots preparing and serving meals, to underwater hotels; from new niche bars and cafes to satisfy diet changes – especially vegan or gluten free restaurants – to the sharing economy or alternative lodging – AirBnB and couchsurfing for example.
- It’s about diversity
Whether you are going to get a job in a small independent restaurant or in an international hotel chain, you are going to work in a multicultural environment. This refers not only to the clientele, but to the team members as well. In this work, it will often happens to have colleagues coming from all over the world, bringing in their own language, culture and experience. Working in such an international and stimulating context will enrich you both on a professional and personal level.
- It offers real career opportunity
As a hospitality professional, you will have the chance to rapidly move horizontally, which means within the organizational levels, and vertically, across the organizational levels, making your way up the ladder very quickly. Hard work, academic qualifications and a proactive attitude, together with a natural vocation, are basic tools that will lead you straight to the desired job position. The opportunity for your career development in the world of hospitality are practically unlimited.
- You can play the hero
Hospitality is all about people and making them happy. Whether you work as a guest service agent in a hotel, as a kitchen help in a Michelin star restaurant or as a manager in a local bistro, you are making someone else’s day a little bit better. Sometimes people will look at you as if you were the most amazing person on the planet only because you offer them an extra treatment or because you decorate a table for their special occasion.
- It’s fun
Working in this field is awesome! As any other job, there are of course ups and downs, but the challenging, satisfying and stimulating environment you work in is definitely unique.
